Daniels Signs Defunding Bill; PPIN Takes Fight to Court
Just a quick update to let you know that on Tuesday the governor followed through on his promise to sign HEA 1210.
As you’re well aware by now, this a terrible law that we fought the entire legislative session. It takes away federal funding from PPIN by barring the state from entering into contracts with, or granting to, our organization. And it does even more damage to public health policy by writing into law that “human physical life” begins with a fertilized egg; requiring that doctors provide medically inaccurate information to their patients; and encroaching on Roe v. Wade by banning abortions after 20 weeks.
Immediately after the bill was signed yesterday, we took legal action to protect our patients. With the assistance of the ACLU of Indiana, we went to U.S. District Court and filed a request for an injunction and temporary restraining order.
We expect the judge in this case to make a decision today on the temporary restraining order. When we hear what the judge has to say, we’ll fill you in as quickly as possible.
Thanks.
My first job as a Family Therapist was at Marion County’s Adolescent Health Clinics. (1981).
There we treated adolescent boys and pregnant girls -as well as a few girls under the age of six who presented with a sexually transmitted disease (STD)! It is vital that INDIANA’S LEADERS recognize the need for EDUCATION TO PREVENT SEXUAL ABUSE in all populations.
Please continue to advocate for and fund Planned Parenthood, one of the few organizations that works to prevent and address such tragic problems.
Respectfully,
