Let’s Talk

August 31, 2010

This long, hot summer is nearly over (thank goodness).  It’s time for young women and men from around the state to buckle down at colleges and universities all over the U.S.

Back at home, their parents are left to wonder and worry:  have we prepared them for this experience?  Have we talked with them enough about why they need to go to class; why a post-secondary education is more important than ever; why, despite the many temptations, they need to develop relationships that are healthy and that build their self-esteem?

Have we  had the right conversations with our young people about sex?   Have we had them soon enough?  And teens, do you feel you have the answers you need ,  or know where to find them,  to live healthy lives and have solid relationships?

As a parent, I know how easy it is to avoid those critical conversations to get our young ones ready to lead healthy and well-informed lives.  We all know we have a responsibility to discuss the not-entirely-comfortable topics of sexually transmitted disease, pregnancy, contraception and even cancers that are related to sexual activity.

I also know, because of my own experience with my sons and because of my line of work, that talking to our daughters and sons really does make a difference.  They are actually listening, even if it seems they are totally blocking.  I know what an extraordinary resource Planned Parenthood of Indiana is to help parents and teens with their questions and concerns about their sexual health, let alone their overall health.

But where do they get it when they’re away from home?

I’m hoping that’s where this blog, and PPIN’s other social media outreach, comes in.

We’re launching this blog today because we want to encourage an open discussion about reproductive health care and the issues surrounding sexuality.  We want to share information about topics that interest young and old alike.  We want to engage you in two-way conversations that make everyone think, and maybe even spur some of you to action.

You’ll hear from me quite a bit here, but you’ll also be treated to “guest bloggers” who will share their personal stories and opinions.  We’ll discuss the news of the day… what’s going on at the Indiana Statehouse…tips for staying healthy.  You name it, we’re ready.

So, let’s talk.  We want to hear from you – whether you’ve just had your first baby, you’re sending your first child away to college, or you’ve been an empty-nester for years.

Shoot your suggestions for blog posts, your questions or concerns, or your general feedback to advocates@ppin.org.  Or, you can simply post your thoughts in the comments section below each post.

Thanks much, and I look forward to hearing what you think about PPIN’s new blog!
